Why We Do - Reasons We Are Here
Humanitarian Disaster - Persecution - Diminished Rights
Humanitarian Disaster - 97% of the population is living below the World Bank -designated international poverty line of $1.90 a day. According to the 2022 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) the most at-risk are children and households headed by women. 97% of the household are now unable to meet basic needs, including food and medical care - Save The Children Organisation. Before the new regime took control of Afghanistan, a foreign aid funded a large portion of the country’s healthcare sector. International sanctions cut off most of the foreign aid provided to the local healthcare service. Public hospitals had difficulties providing special surgical procedures due to the lack of professionals, equipment, and medicines. And even if they are able to perform, the waiting lists are long.
Persecution - Women and children are the most vulnerable in areas of conflict and war. They are subject to abuse, sexual violation, maiming and harm. With the US withdrawal and the collapse of the Afghan government, thousands of lives were placed at extreme high risk. The amnesty promised to the thousands of former NATO/US, International IOs and NGOs employees, soldiers, policemen, former governmental employees, subjected them to torture and/or execution by the current regime. Those who are still alive, went into hiding and they live in fear of captivity and death.
Diminished Rights - Under the current regime women are deprived to work and travel outside without a male companion with them. They face persecution and rape daily. “The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission estimates that between 60 and 80 per cent of all marriages are forced marriages,” and often with violence. Of that, 57% of the girls are married before the age of 16.
Girls above the 10th grade are deprived to attend school and the number of deaths at child delivery, self-immolation and suicide are rising among Afghan women.
Women activists’ demonstration for basic human rights are violently repressed. Several women rights activists were arrested, tortured, raped and/or killed.
